I also HIGHLY recommend the DDS/DAT drives.  

You'll also need a SCSI controller (I've never seen an IDE DAT drive). 

Don't be tempted by IDE tape drives, they are not as dependable as the
DAT drives, and don't think you'll save money by buying an IDE drive! 
You'll come out ahead with a DAT drive and a SCSI controller the very
first time you go to buy tapes.  (DAT tapes are a lot cheaper and more
dependable.)  DAT drives format the tape as it records data, plus it
also verifies the tape and will automatically skip over bad parts. 
Other tapes need to be pre-formatted and certified 100% error free to
work, which is why they cost so much more money.
