Yes, this can be done.  You will need to shrink your windows XP partition.  This
may require special software (such as partition Magic).

After that, Linux can be installed and Windows XP can be coerced into acting as
the bootloader for both OSes.  For more info, check this out:

The files mkwinboot.README   and mkwinboot.img are what you're interested in. 
The .img file is an altered version of a rescue disk called RIP.  The README
file tells you how to use it.
