You shouldn't have to visit any of those PC's to apply the patch.
And this isn't having to use SMS or buy or install anything. I managed
a decent sized (120+ PC's at main building) network that I migrated from
OS2/Warp to WinNT about 4 years ago(not by choice). When doing so, I
quickly learned to make use of policies. I customized the template file
to include other features that weren't there. Basically, any registry
change that you want to make you can do automagically when a user logs
on. Changes get applied as soon as they are validated (not the same as
logon scripts).
If they are authenticated by a domain controller (or even a Linux box
with samba) I strongly suggest using policies. Really makes things
easier.
