I was just reading the Moshe Bar interview here:
http://interviews.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/07/1255227&mode=thread&tid=156

I didn't know there was an Open Source (QPL license) IBM Mainframe
emulator called Hercules. This would be a good familiarity/training
tool for learning the platform without having one. I just found the
project homepage here:
http://www.conmicro.cx/hercules/

The FAQ is a good read. It's nice to be able to learn a bit about the
VM stuff and accommodating it on the platform -- even if those parts are
not all free.

P.S. I agree with the Hercules guys and Moshe, if IBM was to try to
shut them down, they would only be hurting themselves. If I want to run
production IBM mainframe apps with the full z/VM goodies, I'd get an
actual IBM z mainframe! It only gets people familiar with the platform
and causes more sales!

But all the IT media can talk about is how it renders MSIE-only
