I feel the same way, actually. However, for many places (ISPs, etc) Pop3
is used because it saves on disk space.

>From an Admin and usability standpoint, Pop3 is a *nightmare*. If you
want all email backed up, you've got to get each person to copy files, or
whatever. If someone's workstation dies, there goes their mail. If
someone is using a different computer, their goes your mail. My father
bugs me daily about how he can't reach his email for work at home, from
his laptop for work, etc. It's nice to have all your email in one place,
centrally available from anywhere (other clients, webmail) and that is
easily backed up once and for all. I once had a job (for a few weeks)
where it was my job to back up all the workstations, but the other admin
refused to set up a file server, so I had to make sure every single person
there put all their files in their 'shared' directory. Then, it was my job
to back that up (which failed every single day without fail). When
someone's workstation died, and they hadn't put their files in the special
directory on their computer, and financial records from the past 2 years
were lost, my suggestion for a file server was finally heeded (and the
first time, it was met with angry, 'ive been in the industry for 10 years'
style yelling.)

Blech.
