Nope it port scans (more or less) to discover whats on the network.  No
"monitoring port" involved.

Separate.  But there is a link in one of the documents to just the right
place at sun.  The package I got is called j2sdk-1.4.0_01-fcs

yep, like....

rpm -Uvh rrdtool apt apt-devel tomcat4 tomcat4-manual tomcat4-webapps
opennms opennms-webapp

If your list opennms before tomcat it won't work,  but will happily
install.
