Ethernet and IP Networks
by Adam Williams
An intermediate level overview of Ethernet, the world's
most common LAN technology, and IP, the protocol that
makes the internet go. Understanding ethernet and IP
is essential to troubleshooting in today's networked
world. This presentation includes example commands for
UNIX/Linux, Micro$oft Windows, Cisco IOS, and Nortel CLI.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:

Adam used OpenOffice v1.0 w/ a laptop running Red Hat Linux
to display his presentation using the KLUG SVGA projector.
He defined networks and showed us two network models. The
old traditional OSI Seven-Layer Network model and the more
up-to-date and practical Network Stack model. Application,
TCP or UDP, IP, and Network Interface. He defined network
terms and topologies. He described a "connection," told
us about MAC addresses, protocols, cables, switching, and
more networking info than could be digested casually. On
to IP and all about the technical details from ARP to TCP!
He gave us a list of networking and IP utility tools.

Adam finished up with explanations of TCP/IP packets, ports,
and difference between frames and packets. He suggested that
anyone interested look at his previous networking presentations
and especially the one on performance tuning your Linux OS.

A word to the wise from someone who deals with network reality.
Generally, a standard ethernet network can only achieve 40-50%
of the theoretical performance capacity. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids,
but the network he deals with is all over Michigan,
with a couple of hundred workstations, running Linux
and other operating systems. Not only does he deal
with domain issues at work, but he is also the owner of
the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on the main KLUG
mailing list, both presenting and solving some of the
most challenging networking and configuration problems.

Linux and the DVD
by Wesley Leonard
Wesley Leonard will offer us an overview of the DVD
medium, and why playing DVDs on Linux (or any open
source OS) is an issue. As well as how to actually
get DVD playback working under Linux. Come and
witness a demo of DVD playback and a review of DVD
software available for Linux.
Wesley Leonard is a recent graduate of Western Michigan
University with a degree in computer engineering. He
recently moved to Holland (Michigan) and has started his
own IT business.

KLUG "PC SHOW" PUBLIC OUTREACH PROJECT HAD A SUCCESSFUL EVENT!
The big yellow KLUG banner was again proudly displayed on
May 11, 2002 at the ALSCS COMPUTER SHOW in KALAMAZOO, MI!
This show is again held at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds.
Again, lots of Linux CD-ROM's were made available to the public
and many contacts were made. To get more info or to volunteer
to help with the next public event that KLUG has planned, please

BOOGIES CYBER CAFE - KLUG's public commercial Linux project.

Stop in and see this "pay-to-compute" implementation.

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogies is being
supplemented by volunteers. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. Various upgrades and enhancements are
being applied currently, including three new workstations and
other hardware upgrades. Contact "Robert G. Brown" <bob@acm.org>
to help out or for more info. Get on the Boogies Volunteer
mailing list and start learning and contributing today!
A KLUG PC RUNNING LINUX HAS BEEN PLACED AT THE KALAMAZOO CHAMBER
of Commerce to provide DHCP services. This will enable easier
internet access for KLUG members attending meetings at the Chamber.
Lots more additions planned between KLUG and K C of C. A newsgroup
server, web server, networking, and eventually EVERYTHING! The
synergy is peaking! Hardware is being installed and KLUG
