if you get a free software called netdemon
It does a simple test for mail relay and it works great. It will now also check the black list sites to make sure your emial server is not on it.

How can one test an email server to determine if it is an open-relay
server?  I would like to test our email server as well as a couple of
other machines that have been set up by friends/associates, etc..
