Get yourself a single-floppy (or CD-based) linux distribution, like
DemoLinux, or Tom's root-boot, and bring up the system with that (I'll
let others recoomend specific distros, I've used both of the above, and
even the Red Hat rescue diskette for this). Once the system is running
with that system, you can then try to mount or fsck the file systems that
are giving you problems.
Generally, I find something else to do with hard drives that give me these
problems, although it need not always be a doorstop, paperweight, etc.
