Linux and the DVD
by Wesley Leonard
Wesley Leonard offered us an overview of the DVD
medium and why playing DVDs on Linux (or any open
source OS) is an issue. We saw a configuration that
actually got DVD playback working under Linux. We
witnessed 3 applications for DVD playback work and
heard a review of DVD software available for Linux.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:

This excellent presentation may have been in violation of
that insidious DIGITAL MILLENNIUM COPYRIGHT ACT but also
was so obviously U.S. Constitution protected FREE SPEECH.
Wesley used the KLUG SVGA projector and a 17" monitor
connected to a Red Hat Linux desktop workstation to bring
us a three part, and broad, understanding of DVD and Linux.
Part I - DVD Information
The first part was an introduction to DVD that included:

4.) Disadvantages

6.) Playback issues with Linux

1.2 Ghz AMD Duron, 256 Mb RAM, Matrox G450,
and a 10X DVD drive w/ UDMA2 enabled

Linux need's these three libraries installed:
libdvdcss - libdvdread - libdvdnav
Tip: Link your DVD drive to /dev/dvd
Tip: Have usr/local/lib in your library path

There are other configuration issues resolved here!
Part II - DVD Demonstration
The second part of Wesley's DVD presentation reviewed
and demonstrated 3 DVD players that work with Linux.
We saw Xine, Ogle, and Mplayer running a DVD and
what the function menus looked like.
Part III - DVD Software Distribution
The third part of Wesley's presentation included the CD
distribution of the DVD software that was demonstrated.

This was one of his main sources of DVD information
Wesley Leonard is a recent graduate of Western Michigan
University with a degree in computer engineering. He
recently moved to Holland (Michigan) and has started his
own IT business. Previously, he was active in the WMU
Computer Club and served as president. He is well known
as one of two who put WIDR radio on the internet. He
has been employed by several computer technology companies
with a wide range of responsibilities. Wesley operates
the domain www.pacdemon.org. He is in the process of
revamping his PHP based web site. The demon-cam was fun!
He has installed Linux so many times (for friends), that
he has lost count (100 +). Wes is a very strong advocate
and supporter for the GNU Linux/Open Source community.

The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems
administrator for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division
of Schupan and Sons. His passion for free software
comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an
Upper Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their
sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk. These
interests are only followed by his love of playing
ice hockey.

KLUG "PC SHOW" PUBLIC OUTREACH PROJECT HAD A SUCCESSFUL EVENT!
The big yellow KLUG banner was again proudly displayed on
May 11, 2002 at the ALSCS COMPUTER SHOW in KALAMAZOO, MI!
This show is again held at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds.
Again, lots of Linux CD-ROM's were made available to the public
and many contacts were made. To get more info or to volunteer
to help with the next public event that KLUG has planned, please

BOOGIES CYBER CAFE - KLUG's public commercial Linux project.
= = = THIS PROJECT IS BEING REFRESHED! = = =
Stop in and see this "pay-to-compute" implementation.

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogies is being
supplemented by volunteers. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. Various upgrades and enhancements are
being applied currently, including three new workstations and
other hardware upgrades. Contact "Robert G. Brown" <bob@acm.org>
to help out or for more info. Get on the Boogies Volunteer
mailing list and start learning and contributing today!
A KLUG PC RUNNING LINUX HAS BEEN PLACED AT THE KALAMAZOO CHAMBER
of Commerce to provide DHCP services. This will enable easier
internet access for KLUG members attending meetings at the Chamber.
Lots more additions planned between KLUG and K C of C. A newsgroup
server, web server, networking, and eventually EVERYTHING! The
synergy is peaking! Hardware is being installed and KLUG
