One reason to buy hard drives and other fragile items from local vendors
and not mail order.  I had some such nonsense once to,  but I stood
there at the counter and got *LOUD*.  They replaced the drive.  Get
belligerant, call the consumer protection agency.  Those places *will*
replace the drive(s),  just to make you leave them alone.

I toasted six western digital drives in nine months,  started with two
drives, each was replaced twice.  They said it was my system.... Naaah! 
The Fujitsus that replaced them (four years ago) are spinning away quite
happily.  And I got my money back (100%) from those WD drives,  no
receipt..
