>>>When I print, no matter if it's to the humble Lexmark 3200 inkjet at
>>>home or to the HP Laserjet 4050 at work, the job comes out grainy.
>>>Additionally, if I print to a postscript file, run it through ps2pdf, I
>>>get the same result: a grainy looking PDF file. The text is OK, but any
>>>kind of graphic looks shabby.
>>What program is generating the original output?
>In Linux, I've tried Star Office and KWord. In W2K, it's Word or
>Publisher printing through Adobe Acrobat.
Ok, I output my presentations to ps from so and use ps2pdf and the output
looks great. What are the printer settings of the device you are using to
print to file. I assume it is useing the "Generic Printer" driver.
>>>If I print a PDF I grab from the Internet (open in xpdf, print to ps
>>>file, send to printer), it's perfect.
>>If you convert the PDF to Postscript (pdftops) and view it in ggv does it do the
>>same thing?
>Hey, that's cool! They *seem* to look better in ggv. Not as choppy and
>grainy, but still not crisp (like the Acrobat created PDF's).
Hmm, we are taking about the *images*, right? Not the text.
>>What version of ghostscript do you have?
>rpm -q ghostscript reveals: ghostscript-6.51-16
Ok, standard RH72 stuff.
>>>>From the reading I've done so far, I'm thinking I need to tweak
>>>something in my ghostscript setup. Any suggestions?
>> Have you tried setting the output resoltion -r<xres>x<yres>
>Nope. Not sure how, but I'll start looking for how to right now. :)
Just as an option to gs or ps2pdf (which just calls gs anyway).
>>Any commonality as to the input graphic format? (You embed a JPEG in an image
>>verses a TIFF, etc...)
>I've only used gif and jpg for graphics thus far. I wish I would have
>saved the original version of the PDF for a flyer I did in Star Office
>and converted to PDF.
>Here are two examples...one pdf and one ps. I think the ps looks better.

>I have to say, the PDF's I create with Acrobat in W2k are crisp and
>clear. But I'd much rather use Linux to do this.
>Thanks for the great info. I super appreciate it!
Haven't got to take a look at these, I'll surf over there in a bit.
