[KLUG Members] linux recovery process

My linux box will no longer allow logins to users, although I can still login 
to root.  This is using KDE to log in.  I can still look at the files in the 
/home/user directories but cannot login as user, it just processes for a few 
seconds and then returns to the login page.

I tried fsck, although did not spend a lot of time with it and may have not 
done it right.

I am looking for something online that I could read to learn how to recover 
from this problem.
