Opps. Did I say N160? It's actually an N600c. I was looking at an N160 across the room as I typed this!

Hey there,

I just got a Compaq Evo N160 laptop at work. A quick search for Linux support shows a gentleman who updated his kernel and X to get it running with the ATI Mobility Radeon display adapter. Well, RH 7.3 met all his specs without any upgrades, so that's what I installed. (Found a FAST mirror!)

Linux runs fine on it with one exception. When in the port replicator (cheap docking station), the display on my external monitor, a 17" LCD, is great. 1280x1024. However, the display on the laptop is trashed. Squiggly, unstable, barely looks like anything. With most laptops, there is keystroke combo to force the video signal out the VGA port, thereby shutting off the laptop display. That combination does not work with Linux. (It does with W2K.)

Out of the port replicator and with no monitor, it's a smooth 1024x768.

Anyone have some pointers for this kind of setup? W2K calls them "hardware profiles", where it sets the display one way while in the port replicator and another when out. I am concerned I am damaging the display on the laptop when it is in the port replicator. Any thoughts?
