Ok ... first the question....

I wiped out my Mandrake 8.2 installation that I was
trying so that I could install RedHat 7.3. I forgot
to record the listings in fstab for mounting my fat32
partition (this was the incredible settings that
worked like really well). I cannot remember what they
were. I can get the system to mount the partition but
the partition is owned by root and the permissions are
setup for 755. Now when I am logged in as myself I
can read the drive but not write to it. This is a
major bummer. Sometimes I feel so clueless. I know
that there is something that I can set in the listing
in fstab so that I can get it to mount so that I can
use it but cannot find out what it is. I tried to
chmod the partition but that does not change anything
(I did not really think it would).

Now as far as how 7.3 is running. I have had it
running for just a day so far. Overall I am
impressed. It installed well. I was a little
surprised at the failure to have OpenOffice available.
I had to load that separately. I am running RedHat
7.1 with the Ximian Gnome at home currently. I was
missing KDE. KDE 3.0 on 7.3 is really nice! I think
Gnome looks a little better but I find KDE much easier
and more functional. 3.0 keeps on uping the ante.

To my disappointment several of the programs in the
menus are not starting currently. I will have to look
into that. So far they are not programs that are that
vitally important.

The CD burning is working flawlessly! I am using
Gnome Toaster. I had to add that package separately
(selected it in "select individual packages" during
install). It loaded Gnome toaster 1.0 beta 5. It has
not even hickuped yet. I am going to try the other cd
burning tools sometime soon, although I love Gnome
toaster!

OpenOffice loaded flawlessly and works great. Galeon
is also on the system so I have my favorite web
browser too. I needed to select Netscape 4.7 (I need
it to get to the java app for the online library
catalogue that will not work with anything newer than
4.7 or IpukeExplorer. I have not tried any of the
KOffice stuff yet but am looking forward to seeing
what version of Kivio is loaded and how it works.

I have not logged into the Gnome desktop yet so cannot
tell you about that.

GnuCash is version 1.6.6.

If you have anything you are curious about ask and I
will check it with you.

Mandrake 8.2 has lots of bells and whistles both on
the install routine and with what it loads but RedHat
still seems to be the rock solid choice. Mandrake
automates a lot of stuff but there were several things
that were a constant frustration that would not work
or worked sporadically. So far in this first 24 hours
RedHat seems to be really really solid with the
exception with the few minor programs that won't
start. The only other frustration with RedHat is that
there still is no way to adjust the screen resolution
for Xwindows other than Xconfigurator. Mandrake 8.2
would let you do it in the control panel as does
Caldara. This is a really big one that RedHat needs
to fix!!!
