THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (27 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
Counting the Beans
by Brian Ritz

Excited about Linux for your home or business. Want all of
your programs and applications to run on linux? Yet you
have to keep that pesky Windows machine around for your
accouting software. But do you really have to? Well I am
here to dispel that Myth for you. Tonight, Brian presented
on 8 different accounting packages, and included a quick
overview of each and their cost (if any). So it is time to
use that old Windows machine for something useful like a
firewall or squid proxy server, or for even sendmail.

Brian's notes will be posted here soon... please be patient!
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/history.php?year=2002

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
*********************
Brian used a laptop PC running Linux and the KLUG
SVGA video projector to display his presentation
notes and then switched over to the DSL internet
connection to visit the web sites of each accounting
application for even more details and info. Brian
presented these Linux accounting solutions and
detailed their features before we went to the web
sites to see the screenshots and read the ordering
information. Costs range from free to $4,000!

*  GNU Ledger
http://www.gnuledger.org
Multi-platform GPL home user financial management package.
GnuLedger is a Web-based accounting system. It has all of the
functionality that an average home user needs to manage their
finances. Its backend is a MySQL database, and it currently uses a
web browser front-end. It has been tested using Internet Explorer,
Mozilla, Opera, and QNX's Voyager.

*  SQL Ledger  <THIS ONE LOOKS HOT & READY>
http://www.sql-ledger.com/
Accounting solution for commercial or manufacturing use.
Handles inventories and all the major functions that
medium to large size companies would need. Wait for
version 1.8.4 and a significant upgrade coming soon!!!

*  Proven Accounting
http://www.provenacct.com/
Targeting large business, Proven offers GUI or text
interfaces with every enterprise class feature displayed
on their web site. They are NOT the lowest cost on this
list of Linux accounting solutions. They may be the most
advanced. The base application package is $2,600. Fees
for additional modules are up to $1,000.

*  Linux Kontor
http://www.linux-kontor.org/en/
Linux-Kontor is a project dealing with the development of a
free business management software. The system's main
components are accounting and commodities. This project
is based in Germany. Has a neat web browser applet to
allow web based accounting and multi-user access. This
is a promising Linux free software project.

*  Quasar Accounting System
http://www.linuxcanada.com/quasar.html
A Canadian Linux project that is focused on wholesale
and retail accounting with Point-of-Sale and heavy
inventory management control and reporting features.
This package also supports bar code functionality.
The base package is free and the specialty modules
have a modest price, $29. The base Linux accounting
package is very lightweight. Fully implemented it
looks looks like a possible Linux business solution.

*  Linux General Ledger
http://www.linuxledgers.com/lglpage1.html
The Linux General Ledger (LGL) is a general business
bookkeeping system specifically designed for small
to medium sized business and client write-up using
the Linux Operating System. It is a state of the art
business application which has been engineered for
ease of use and functionality. Check out their Client
Write-Up System for Accountants... Very inexpensive
licensing fees including source code availability.
http://www.linuxledgers.com/LGLprices.html

*  GNU Cash
http://www.gnucash.org/
If you've been looking for a way to manage your personal finances
under GNU/Linux, you've found it! Designed to be easy to use, yet
powerful and flexible, GnuCash allows you to track bank accounts,
stocks, income and expenses. As quick and intuitive to use as a
checkbook register, it is based on professional accounting principles
to ensure balanced books and accurate reports. GnuCash is backed by
an active development community and is blossoming into a
full-fledged accounting system. Developed under the GPL, you have
no need to worry about obsolescence: GnuCash will be there for you.
Should we say it is a GPL Quicken clone? Forget I said that...
Brian's presentation on & demo of GnuCash to KLUG was on 06-26-2001.
GnuCash is pre-loaded on Red Hat v7.3 and it is now in version 1.6.6!

  - - additional package reviewed <app Stu Gillis uses> - -

*  Money Dance
http://www.moneydance.com/
ANOTHER QUICKEN CLONE?  $39.95
Java based multi-platform basic money management
software. Moneydance is the software to keep track of
your personal finances. The familiar checkbook-register
interface makes managing your money easy, while the
advanced features give you the ability to visually
track your spending. Custom 3D graphs and a reconciler
tool make an easy task of balancing your account.

Brian did a fine job of showing us a spectrum of Linux projects.
We had a hearty round of Questions & Answers and broke into
our informal <read chaotic fun> discussion rants with KLUGites
until almost 10:00pm. We had a fairly large crowd for this
meeting and there was much interest in this subject. Financials
may be the next major application, after the office apps, that
hastens the mass migration to the Total Linux Environment (TLE).

Brian Ritz is currently the Intranet Content Manager for
Morrison Industries and has been working with Linux almost
exclusively as a user of the Whitemice.Org network. He
holds a degree in Finance from Grand Valley State University.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 05/21/2002
********************************************************************
USB and Linux
by Bruce Smith

Bruce will give an introduction to using USB devices on Linux.
The presentation will include a live demonstration of a USB
web cam, a USB digital camera, and a USB disk drive, connected
to the USB port of a laptop running Redhat 7.2 Linux.

Bruce Smith is a Systems Administrator and Software Developer
for Armstrong International Inc. where he is responsible for
a HP-UX network of Servers, Workstations, printers and
X-Terminals spanning five buildings in Three Rivers. Bruce
has a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Central
Michigan University. (go Chips! :) Bruce runs Linux, almost
exclusively, on all his PC's at work and home, and runs a lot
of Armstrong's networking services on Linux!

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.
