  I believe that any modem will do because the modem connects to your
computer via ethernet and uses the tcp/ip protocols.

   Make sure that ATT will support you linux machine if you are going to
have them come out and install it.  Or have a windows machine handy for the
installer and then you can switch it to your linux box after they leave.

   It won't matter if you are doing some sort of self install.

  The only thing I can think of that "may" require windows is software that
comes with the modem.  Such as monitering software if it is not accessible
with a browser.
