KLUG Chairperson Dirk Bartley

I. PRESENTATION RECAP
THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (19 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
Halloween Party: Geek Jeopardy!!!
by Adam Williams assisted by Brian Ritz

Come join KLUG for it's annual Halloween party, this year
including Open Source jeopardy!!! Prizes, Trivia, and Food!
This years topics: Geek Cinema, CPU Architecures, YRO,
Redmond, LDAP, Samba, X11, Slang, XML, CLI, "Things that
spin", and "RFC Potpurri"

GEEK JEOPARDY SUMMARY:
********************************
Brain and Adam put on a very nice evening of fun and laughter
with an excellent, and well presented, display of Geek Jeopardy.
Brian used a cleverly devised spreadsheet done in OpenOffice v1.01
to project the scoring and question catagories/values up on the
screen. Of course, he used a Linux OS based laptop and everything
worked perfectly. The positive scores were calculated in the top
and the negative scores were in the bottom. The top and bottom
were even color coded in green and red. VERY NICE APPLICATION!

Adam had 120 questions that ranged in value from 2 Bytes to 1024
Bytes, in a doubling value order. 2-4-8-16-32-64-128-256-512-1024
The twelve categories were as listed above and the questions had
from howling laughter to puzzled looks in width. In depth, we had
some extremely hard questions and very bright member teams.

TEAM A - Bruce Smith & John Bridleman!
TEAM B - Wes Leonard & Andrew Thompson!
TEAM C - Robert G. Brown & Peter Buxton!
TEAM D - Stu Gillis and Dirk Bartley!

The rest of the attendees sat with the teams and called out answers
occasionally for the team they supported. Some just sat back and
watched the show unfold before them. John Bridleman had brought
the quiz bowl electronic devices that are used for educational
training from a school he is affiliated with. They worked great
and Brian ran these electronics. The lights and buzzers added to
the excitement and you really had to be present to feel the energy.

One can't say enough about the great questions that Adam created.
You try to come with 120 questions and answers for twelve
categories and see how hard it is. HE DID GREAT!!! The favorite
category was Geek Cinema! That went first. Bruce Smith, who
had been sand bagging in the initial questions being shy, went on
his annual run of the 1024 byte (1K) questions across the categories.
Last year he did the same tricky stunt... to the delight of the
other strategists. Clever!!! Only two of those were answered!
Peter Buxton got the first 1K score from the Geek Cinema list.
Bruce Smith scored the ONLY other one with a SAMBA question with
the answer... "What is "Time To Live" (What is TTL?)

The winners got certificates and those that got the 1K answers
won certificates of achievement too! The winning team got a bottle
of COLD Spumante with which to spray foam and celebrate in NASCAR
style if they chose... they did not even crack the cork. We think
they were drinking coffee at 7pm! Typical... At 9pm too!

Food and drinks were in abundance. There were bags of
potato chips, many many many boxes of pizza, gallons of
apple cider, many liters of carbonated beverages, gallons
of spring water, and of course STRONG COFFEE! ;-) The
pizza was eaten with abandon and each piece was devoured
graciously - bite by bite it disappeared.

OK OK OK ! ! ! Who won? Here are the scores...

TEAM A -1196 **************************************************
TEAM B 708 ANDREW THOMPSON AND WES LEONARD GOT THE PRIZES!
TEAM C 118 **************************************************
TEAM D -162

Each of the groups demonstrated strengths and weaknesses in
the various categories. It was an all out battle of the Linux
brain trust from KLUG. Not a dull wit in the crowd this night!

Even though it was Election '02 on this night, people were
hanging around rather late in the party mood and engaging in
discourse. No one seemed concerned about the political
upheavels taking place as a result of the days action at the
polling places.

Adam Williams and Brian Ritz deserve great appreciation.
The pre-event publicity was awesome. Everyone was invited
over and over. When we had the annual KLUG Party cancelled
by a communication problem with the Chamber last week we
worried how the schedule rift would spoil it. Seemed to not
darken the night one bit. Nobody complained and most seemed
glad to be together when ever it worked out. Very positive.

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids,
but the network he deals with is all over Michigan,
with a couple of hundred workstations, running Linux
and other operating systems. Not only does he deal
with domain issues at work, but he is also the owner of
the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on the main KLUG
mailing list, both presenting and solving some of the
most challenging networking and configuration problems.

Brian Ritz works at UPS and also as a shipping department
specialist at ETMA Supply in Grand Rapids. Brian has been
working with Linux almost exclusively as a user of the
Whitemice.Org network. He holds a degree in Finance from
Grand Valley State University.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems
administrator for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division
of Schupan and Sons. His passion for free software
comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an
Upper Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their
sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk. These
interests are only followed by his love of playing
ice hockey.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.
