I made the change global for all users by editing:  /etc/sysconfig/i18n

I don't know what difference "LANG=en_US" makes over "LANG=C", but en_US
is "supported" in the original file.

Here is my new /etc/sysconfig/i18n :

SUPPORTED="en_US"
SYSFONT="lat0-sun16"
SYSFONTACM="iso01"
