Thanks for your suggestions and pointers.  I have looked at an
overview of Apache in O'Reilly's Running Linux and read the section
dealing with httpd.conf, srm.conf and access.conf.  There is
definitely quite a bit of "interplay" amongst these directives and
configuration files.  Especially the AccessFileName .htaccess
directive in srm.conf and AllowOverride All directive in access.conf.
I've also looked at the section at Apache.org you recommended.

Another list subscriber, Daniel, in an earlier email suggested I
request the Virtual Host section (which I have done ... am waiting for
it).
