If the filesystem is ext2/3, I use the command "e2label".  

You don't need to specify any options like SUN/BSD/....

"e2label"  Pay attention!   :-)

Personally I've given up on labels, and specify devices in 
/etc/fstab instead.  More straight forward, IMO.
