All looks like a good explanantion to me, thanks!

The MUA's probably won't be using PAM, however (not  that it matters). 
Most of the desktops in this particular organization use one or another 
of some closed, binary only alternative systems with limited flexibility 
regarding window managers, files systems, etc. I have found links on a 
couple of vendor sites (the same vendor as the OS, in one case, and for 
Eudora in another) when I search for "SMTP Authentication", but none of 
the commercial sites make reference to SASL.
