Yep, and I got gdm to work without a local passwd entry... finally. 
Want to know how?  No.  I'll tell ya' anyway:  I copied the file
/usr/share/doc/nss_ldap-198/pam.d/gdm to /etc/pam.d/gdm.  I tried
setting up LDAP via authconfig (which always worked before) then I
copied /etc/pam.d/system-auth (the global stack everything shares by
default) from a working RedHat box of another release.  No dice.  I
suspect something in their pam setup/compile/link is seriously frelled.

Wouldn't be surprised.  But RH8 GNOME came up for me with the same
top-o-screen panel, applets, and all that I had setup under Ximian.

Ok, I went and found it.  Installed,  but setting web-browser to galeon
in prefferred-applications didn't make it come up when I clicked
web-browser.  I still got mozilla.  So whats the point?  Galeon starts
from the galeon icon just fine.

And it is on the desktop/menu where?
