OTOH, when I click on a link in the terminal window I get Mozilla.
Something is definitely hosed.

Me too, but I have the file: 
/usr/share/gnome/apps/System/red-carpet.desktop
(left over from my upgrade) which shows up under "extras".
That file is also listed in the red-carpet RPM.

Maybe it's linked from somewhere else, not sure.

Yeah, I put the stuff I use on my panel, and don't worry touch the menus
very often.
