For database and file servers, I highly recommend you make sure you get a
mainboard that has multiple I/O and memory channels and a good storage subsystem.

For the P2/P3, these are ServerWorks (fka RCC) chipsets.  For the P4, the Intel
7500 is actually a ServerWorks licensed chipset.

For low-cost, but fast and redundant storage, I highly recommend you investigate
3Ware Escalade ATA RAID controllers.  They are full-up ASIC+SRAM driven boards,
and not "trick BIOS" ones like the Promise FastTrak or mainboard-integrated ones.
