It's true that I run most of my desktops at 1280x1024, but I have
nothing smaller than a 19" monitor to compensate.

I removed the setting from gdm.conf now.  I found a better/easier 
way to specify it.  In Redhat 8.0, if you go to the menu: 

  System-Settings -> Display  

the new configuration GUI lets you select DPI!
(it modifies your monitor size in XF86Config)
