The mozilla plugin page has a direct link to the sun.com page to download the 
java rpms.  Then it is a simple "rpm --install blah..".  I'd do a "rpm -qa | 
grep kaffe" first and remoce tjose packages if they are there.  Kaffee is a 
free, but sad, jvm.  Then Java stuff works great.  But I've used OO without JRE 
installed before and didn't notice that any of the standard functions were 
affected.
