Last year I gave half of my tax "rebate" to the EFF. It felt great.

BTW: Did those rebates do anything for the economy besides raising my
daughters future taxes?

Thanks to everyone who came to the meeting last night. There was
some great discussion during and afterwards.

Several people asked "what can we do?" I mentioned the ACLU's
support of the DMCA case at the end, but somehow I got through the
whole evening without mentioning the EFF. The Electronic Frontier
Foundation isn't currently working on any court cases, but they
have been one of the only groups that consistently stand up for
online rights. They're also one of the few groups with the
experience and name recognition to make a difference.

There's a great Flash presentation of a recent Larry Lessig speech
that everyone should see: <http://randomfoo.net/oscon/2002/lessig/>
In the talk, he asks how many people have given money to the EFF.
Then he asks how many have given as much as they have given to the
"other side," the corporations and other groups that are working
to erode our freedom.

I made a pledge when I heard that: I'm going to try to keep track
of how much money I spend on CDs (RIAA), movies (MPAA), software
from large companies (Microsoft), and see if I can't at least send
a matching amount to the EFF.
