I. PRESENTATION RECAP
THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (22 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
YRO: Your Rights Online - An Overview
by Jamie McCarthy

Tonight Jamie provided an overview of topics from
the "Your Rights Online" section of Slashdot.
http://slashdot.org/yro/

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
***********************
Jamie used a laptop running Linux and Star Office with
the KLUG SVGA projector to show us an overview of YRO!
The conclusion of this presentation left us sitting
stunned in our seats. Was this a reality bomb or an
intense knowledge drop! YUP! This isn't Kansas anymore!

=================
>>>>> YRO PART 1
=================

While this presentation covered the effects of the Digital
Millenium Copyright Act [1998] he addressed intellectual
property issues in general. The specific DMCA issues
include Section 1201 & 512.

Section 1201 made it illegal to "circumvent a technological
measure that effectively controls access to a work." It
adds... "or to provide software that does!" Cases cited:
1.)
Sklyarov: (backup) broke the e-book protection and offered
method to the public.
2.)
2600/Emmanuel Goldstein: Linking DeCSS & DVD decryption.
3.)
Felten(Princeton) vs. RIAA SDMI pre-emptive strike for
erasing the watermark ID's on digital music as invited
to by the RIAA for security testing.
4.)
Edelman vs. N2H2 [Censorware] Researched the censorware
filtering technology

Section 512 - Service provider "safe harbor" rule for
instant removal of copyrighted material - Examples:
1.)
Microsoft notified Slashdot: Remove Kerberos protocol
information
2.)
Church of Scientology/RTC notified Slashdot: Remove
comment information about Church of Scientology/RTC
(Will they demand that these references be removed???).
3.)
Church of Scientology/RTC notified e-Bay: Remove the
offer for sale of an e-meter (device which supposedly
measures "the level of e-gram" that needs to be removed
from a Scientologist).

DMCA Judicial Summary:
Little progress is being made in the courts to define these
confusing and often ambiguous aspects of the DMCA and how
it applies to the practical use in an expanding digital
technology!

=================
>>>>> YRO PART 2
=================

Next Jamie launched us into discussion of the CBDTPA Act,
1998 Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act (Disney), trademarks
and domain names, patents, and censorware & the Minor
Protection Act. He gave us detailed examples and insights
into each of these areas.

Jamie held up his ISP's 'Terms of Use' agreement included
in the User's Guide and also incorporating an acceptable
use policy. The end user agreement prohibits any illegal
activity, profanity, or pornography and requires that you
not allow others to engage in these while using your account.
This is the "Death of the End-to-End Internet." No longer
are you free to explore any and all parts of the internet.

We examined the effect of direct government oversight and
political based filtering as is being experienced in China.
If this was not enough to make one run for the nearest
exit screaming with paranoid overindulgence... just wait,
Jamie was about to drop a reality bomb on KLUG'ites that
would leave them stunned in their seats! MICROSOFT IS BACK!

=================
>>>>> YRO PART 3
=================

Microsoft's attempt to eliminate GPL'd software and more...
TRUSTWORTHY COMPUTING PLATFORM ALLIANCE & Palladium (Pd)!!!
Make hardware ONLY work with a signed encrypted key for
control and security purposes. Intel's Le Grande technology
is going into Prescott CPU for release by 2003. Prescott
is the code name for Intel's new gen of CPU that replaces
the Pentium 4. Can M$ pull off this major step backwards?
Jamie says he believes that Bill Gates can and will do this.
Is this a political/corporate attack on our freedom to run
GPL'd or non-M$ software??? It sure as heck smells like it!

KEY IDEA & QUOTE FROM MICROSOFT!
"We have completely refocused the company in a profound
way to make "Trustworthy Computing" our number one priority,
bar none." - Microsoft Senior Vice-President, Craig Mundie

WILL MICROSOFT CONTROL ALL OF COMPUTING AT THE CPU LEVEL???
Europe and Asia (China & India key) may not want to allow
Microsoft to dominate the internet. Apple and IBM may be
major players in the revolt against this corporate attack.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
JAMIE REMINDED US OF A OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY VOICE...
"Standing up to an evil system is exhilarating!"
- Richard Stallman (parent of the GPL, eMacs & GNU)
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Jamie McCarthy is a writer for Slashdot's "Your Rights
Online" section, and lead programmer at NewsForge. A
graduate of K College and a microcomputer communicator
for the past 25 years, he has pioneered many areas of
digital political and social behavior. The former
server-side Perl scripting and MySQL programmer for
InGenius that was subsequently acquired by a San
Fransico based web portal innovator. He continues in
his career, using the Unix/Linux toolset that he prefers,
advancing the edge of socially responsible PC resource
information and standards.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

Will Neo or Morpheus snuff out Bill Gates in the explosive
storyboards of The Matrix - Part 3? A Messiah (Love) vs.
anti-Messiah (Greed) meme??? Follow the white rabbit!

system users in the Kalamazoo Michigan area. We
support, promote, and develop activities related
to the use, study, and application of LINUX in the
local community.

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help

meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!
