Samba Shorts (Time & Printer Drivers)
by Peter Buxton and Adam Williams

KLUG presents "Samba Shorts", brief presentations detailing
specific features of the ubiquitous Samba network server package.
First Adam Williams explained how to load Win32 print drivers
onto a Samba printer server so that they could be automatically
downloaded by the client, should they connect to a given printer.
Next up, Peter Buxton explained clock synchronization of UN*X
servers and Win32 workstations.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY
************************
SAMBA AND WINDOWS PRINTER DRIVERS!
------------------------------------
Adam Williams started out the evening by showing KLUGites how
to configure Samba to handle printers from Windows clients.
He used a laptop running Red Hat and the KLUG SVGA projector
to show us how all this works. He showed us how to configure
Samba's smb.conf file.

For Red Hat, we saw the Samba setting: printcap = /etc/printcap

Adam pointed out that two shares need to be included in the
smb.conf file to enable Windows print drivers to work. One
share was [printers] and the other was [print$].

[printers]
comment = all printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
writable = no
printable = yes
public = yes

[print$]
path = /usr/pcnet/printers
guest ok = yes
browseable = yes
read only = yes
write list = @cis,root

The drivers come from Samba files named: (includes each Windows version)
W32ALPHA
W32MIPS
W32PPC
W32X86
WIN40

Adam then showed us a Samba utility called rpcclient! This allowed
printer drivers to be loaded from the Linux side of Samba. He gave
us a demo of how it it used to load Windows printer drivers. You can
load them from Windows or Linux and make them work with Samba. We
saw how to switch them from one driver to another from both sides.

Come back for - MORE from Adam Williams...
2003-09-16 - Win32 Administration With Linux
The combination of Linux, Samba, and common scripting languages can be
powerful tools in managing Win32 (NT, 2K, XP) workstations. Learn how to
remotely reboot, backup, virus scan, and interrogate workstations as
well as invoke and schedule processes. And all from a Microsoft free
desktop.

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but the
network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple of
hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also
the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing list,
both presenting and solving some of the most challenging
networking and configuration problems.

SAMBA & TIME SYNCHRONIZATION!!!
----------------------------------
Peter used a laptop running Red Hat and the KLUG SVGA projector
to show us how to configure Samba to synchronize time between
Samba running on a Linux server and the Windows workstations.
He showed us that you use the configuration setting:
"NTP server" = "time,0x1"
"type" = "NTP"

Peter mentioned that you can have the time corrected or matched
to a web-based time server. He chooses to run rdate on a regular
basis to manually correct any time discrepancies. The time can
drift a few minutes here and there and it is a good idea to keep
an eye on that.

Peter Buxton has been messing with computers since middle
school but has stubbornly refused to learn programming until
recently. He learned to manually configure sendmail.cf and
ppp command lines while he used, as few others did, OS/2 on
his desktop. This personal quirk proved a valuable asset
when he switched to Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 in 1999, as
linux.net.support is a vital resource (especially for Debian).

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 04/15/2003

The GIMP
by Andrew Thompson

As most Linux artists already know, the GIMP has become THE paint
program for the serious open-source artist. While not (yet) the
PhotoShop killer we hope to see one day, it offers many of the
same features for a much nicer price, and adds good scripting
facilities 'That Other Paint Program' still only dreams of.
Andrew Thompson will demonstrate the features of the program

Andrew Thompson is a contract draftsman currently employed at Denso
Manufacturing Michigan in Battle Creek, and installmaster for the
Kalamazoo Linux Users Group. An amateur cartoonist of some (very)
small renown, he keeps a small sampling of his work at his own
little hole-in-the-net gallery at The Imagerie.

RED HAT ANNOUNCES CONTENT MGMT SYSTEM & PORTAL SERVER
Red Hat announced the addition of a content management system and
portal system to the Red Hat Enterprise Applications family of
products. Red Hat brings to the application space the same
extraordinary benefits proven with Red Hat Enterprise Linux:
Low cost, high value with a powerful community software
development model. Backed by the same disciplined engineering
team and global 24x7 support capabilities, Red Hat now offers
a complete enterprise solution that is delivered and managed
through Red Hat Enterprise Network.

RED HAT ENABLES ISV'S TO MIGRATE TO ENTERPRISE LINUX
Red Hat Ready Program is designed for ISVs to self-certify
applications on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Exclusive Offers
for Oracle Partners. The world's premier open source and
Linux provider, today introduced the "Red Hat Ready"
Independent Software Vendor (ISV) application program.
Designed to allow vendors to test and qualify their software
applications on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the Red Hat Ready
application program is the best way for ISVs to align
themselves with Red Hat. "We are witnessing tremendous
demand from software vendors that want to certify their
products for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Recent research by
Evans Data discovered that 59% of all developers plan to
write Linux applications in the next year," says Mark de
Visser, VP of Marketing at Red Hat. "The Red Hat Ready
program has been created to address this demand."

LINUS TORVALDS: LINUX KERNEL 2.5.67
All over the place as usual - there's definitely a lot of small
things going on. PCMCIA and i2c updates may be the most noticeable
ones. http://linuxtoday.com/developer/2003040701426NWKNDV
=====================================================================
LINUS TORVALDS: THE GREAT DICTATOR
The Benevolent, Brilliant Keeper of the Kernel
The Linux kernel project is growing up. New contributors, job
delegation, and a source code control system have changed the
way the kernel gets hacked. The guy at the center of it all
-- Linus Torvalds -- has changed, too. Gone are his days as
poster boy for Open Source. He doesn't do Comdex keynotes
anymore; he's not on the covers of business magazines; and
he rarely gives interviews. No, these days, Linus is all
about what he does best: hacking the kernel and keeping a
sure and steady hand on the rudder of everyone's favorite
project. http://www.linux-mag.com/2002-12/linus_01.html

ORACLE'S ELLISON: LINUX WILL WIPE M$ OUT OF THE DATA CENTER
At a gathering yesterday of current and potential Oracle Corp.
independent software vendor partners, Oracle Chairman and CEO
Larry Ellison extolled the virtues of Linux and predicted that
the open-source operating system will soon decimate Microsoft
Corp. in the battle for the data center market.

DUKE3D IN LINUX [April 6, 2003]
"So it took four days, but Duke3d now runs in Linux, courtesy
of Icculus.org. Ironically, a win32 port has yet to be released.
Features include full sound support, hi-res video modes (aka
VESA modes for those familiar with DOS), saved games, full screen
or windowed viewing, and even the BUILD editor works (to a degree).
No mouse, demos, or networking just yet, but the basic gameplay is
there and now that the BUILD engine has been ported a win32 version
is soon on the horizon."

MIGRATING TO LINUX NOT EASY FOR WINDOWS USERS
No matter which distribution is tested, one migration-minded newbie
finds much to be desired when installing, configuring and working
on a dual-boot Windows/Linux system. For those of you looking for
a from-the-hip discussion of Linux's shortcomings from a neophyte's
perspective, look no further.

LEGATO'S NETWORKER V7.0 TO SUPPORT LINUX
Considered by many to be less expensive and more stable than Windows,
Linux for mainstream backup makes sense, experts say, as data grows
and advanced technologies such as storage area networks become less
of an elite-only option. Legato Systems Inc.'s Networker 7.0,
launched in March, can now back up clients running Red Hat Inc.'s
and SuSE Linux AG's distributions, running on Intel Corp.'s 64-bit
Itanium chip, said officials of the Mountain View, Calif., company.
New versions of other Unix-based operating systems such as AIX,
Mac OS X and Tru64 are also now available, as are journaling features,
they said. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,985517,00.asp

FREEBSD V4.8 RELEASED
"FreeBSD's Murray Stokely announces the long awaited availability of
FreeBSD 4.8, the latest FreeBSD-stable release, which has dealt with
known security issues, and added initial support for Firewire,
HyperThreading, and other new hardware technologies. Murray says
that the new release is also the result of conservative updates to
a number of software programs in the FreeBSD base system."

GNU & LINUX - SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
Most references to GNU/Linux nowadays drop the GNU prefix, refering
to it as just "Linux." While this may be a result of a human tendency
toward convenience, one must not forget that the GNU/Linux operating
system that we use today had its roots in the GNU project, and still
carries its mark in the GPL -ed programs bundled with it.

THE OPENOFFICE.ORG SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT KIT RELEASED
"The OpenOffice.org group on Friday announced a kit that lets
programmers build new modules for open-source alternatives to the
Microsoft Office suite. This new SDK is an add-on for OpenOffice.org
1.0.2. It provides the necessary tools and documentation for
programming the OpenOffice.org APIs and creating your own extensions
UNO components) for OpenOffice.org."The highlight of this SDK is the
new Developer's Guide. This comprehensive guide provides, in 900
pages, a detailed description of the OpenOffice.org API concepts,
the OpenOffice.org UNO component model and how to use the API in
the context of the different application areas.""

CLUELESS NEWBIE'S LINUX ODYSSEY
"Just what we've always (said we) wanted: people who are fed up with
Microsoft and are willing, even eager, to give Linux a real try.
Well, she did. And did. And did some more. Not only that, she's a
technical writer and she took notes. Not fun reading, but worth
reading anyway."

GNU FOR WINDOWS?
One of the first things many people think of when they hear "open
source" is Linux. True, Linux is probably the most visible and most
ambitious open source project, but there are thousands of open
source applications out there, and some of them even run under --
gasp! -- Windows. Take for instance GNUWin II from GNU Generation.
It's a collection of more than 100 GNU applications that run under
Windows. http://newsforge.com/newsforge/03/04/02/170248.shtml?tid=11

THE ULTIMATE LINUX BOX: A CASE STUDY
Once again, it's time to consider how to build the Ultimate Linux
Box. This time we're going to do things a bit differently: I'm
going to analyze one element at a time, write a web article on
it, take readers' feedback from that, add the next component and
so on, until we've built the entire box together. A little
open-source project, if you will.

LINUXPLANET: REASONING YOUR WAY TO LINUX
"All open source programmers believe in their heart of hearts that
open source is not only the best way to write software, it produces
the best possible software. There hasn't been any hard proof from an
non-partisan third party demonstrating that open source code was
actually superior to closed source. Until now..."

BUSINESS EXPO IS PLANNED FOR WEDNESDAY MAY 21ST AT THE RADISSON HOTEL.
The Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce will be holding another business
exposition in the Grand Ballroom at the Radisson Plaza Hotel. There
will be an "IT Zone" designated that will highlight digital technology.
A KLUG speaker is also needed to make a presentation in the IT Zone's
program. Please contact Bob at publicitydirector@kalamazoolinux.org
if you can volunteer as a presenter for this event.
=====================================================================
KLUG NEEDS VOLUNTEERS TO FILL SEVERAL VACANT POSITIONS
Nutrimaster and Education Director volunteer slots are still
vacant. We need additional volunteers to act as the "Meeting
Firewall" to handle Chamber access control and security issues.
The Chamber has asked us to safeguard their assets as KLUG
members come and go from the meeting room each Tuesday night.
Bob and Zac need help with this function which requires that
you get to the meetings early and see that the everything is
locked up as the last person leaves. This means being at the
Chamber at 6:30pm and hanging around until 10:00pm. We have
other volunteer positions available and many of these duties
could be shared if you have an interest. GET INVOLVED IN KLUG!
Volunteers are needed for Beginner's Nights and Installfests.
Please contact installmaster@kalamazoolinux.org for more details.
See http://kalamazoolinux.org/organize for position descriptions.
