What kind of server?

If your server is a Linux server then you need to read up on NIS a.k.a. 
ypbind and NFS as well.
If your server is a Windows box, then you need to read up on Samba.
If your server could be either one, then you need to read up on Samba-LDAP 
and probably winbind.
