A good way to measure this is to walk around while pinging your WAP.

Height should not matter much.  802.11 is a pretty weak signal.  
Theoretically, as height increases distance should decrease -- (AA + BB 
= CC).   You should get the most distance at the on the same plane as 
your transmitter.  Unless, of course you want to get over an obstacle.  
I mounted an antenna on my apartment building to get around a tree.
