It is sort of like #2, except Open Office isn't a GNOME app so obviously
it doesn't use GNOME-VFS.  Ximian hooked it up to the VFS and a couple
of other subsystems so it interoperates with the rest of the desktop.  

Bieng able to work with Word/Except/Point files is great, but you have
to be able to get them to appear in File->Open first.
