One of the more interesting laptop displays I saw was Quake II, with
full 3D acceleration, on a laptop, with a nice, black border around it.
Were I brighter, or more retentive, I could tell you why it is that
LCD's cannot change resolution exactly like a CRT. Nevertheless, try
changing the resolution to 1280x1024 and see what that does.
