BIND (DNS) Shorts: DNSSEC & SDB
By Adam Williams & Peter Buxton
Tonight we have two BIND/DNS presentations.
Adam Williams, System Administrator and local LDAP Guru will be
demonstrating BIND SDB and SDB LDAP in particular. SDB is a layer
in bind that permits domain name information to be drawn from
various sources such as an RDBMS or LDAP server. This lets you
simply use 'named' as a DNS front end to a centralized or
pre-existing source of host information.
http://www.venaas.no/ldap/bind-sdb/
Peter Buxton will present on the subject of DNSSEC. Security
Extensions for DNS. http://www.dnssec.net/
PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
************************
Adam Williams and Peter Buxton presented two useful approaches to
BIND implementation. Adam educated us about DNS SDB (Simplified
Database Interface).
BIND is the core of Domain Name System ([BIND] An implementation
of a DNS server developed and distributed by the University of
California at Berkeley. (NOTE: [DNS] A general-purpose distributed,
replicated, data query service chiefly used on Internet for
translating hostnames into Internet addresses. Also, the style
of hostname used on the Internet, though such a name is properly
called a fully qualified domain name. DNS can be configured to
use a sequence of name servers, based on the domains in the name
being looked for, until a match is found).
D N S S D B
-------------------
Adam used a Toshiba laptop connected to the KLUG XGA projector and
running Red Hat v9 with the Ximian XD2 desktop and OpenOffice.org
Impress to take us through 11 slides of detailed explanation of
DNS SDB. Look for Adam's presentation notes on the KLUG web site
shortly. http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/
CONTENT SUMMARY:
What is SDB?
The API - create, destroy, lookup, authority, allnodes
Why SDB?
Integration
Start Up Time - Faster
Maintainability
Why Not?
Potentially Less Stable
Divergence
Read Only
Features Limited
What Backends?
epqsqldb - PostgreSQL
bm - MySQL
LDAP SDB - LDAP
Adam gave specific examples specific details on LDAP SDB
BIND Configuration Example
LDAP Dit - Directory Information Tree
LDAP Objects: Listed
DNS & Cosine Schema
Extended: DNS Zone Schema
D N S S E C
------------------
Peter used a Toshiba laptop connected to the KLUG XGA projector and
running Red Hat v9 with the Ximian XD2 desktop switching between the
browser and the terminal window. Initially using the browser,
Peter showed us the details of DNS SEC (Security Extensions) using
the information published at:
http://fre-ks.greatplains.net/bind/Bv9ARM.ch04.html#DNSSEC
Then he connected to a remote system he administers using SSH so he
could show us how DNS SEC is actually configured and what the files
look like. He told us that DNS SEC is only part of BIND 9.
CONTENT SUMMARY:
Background on DNS SEC (security extensions) in BIND 9.
Example: RNDC - confgen
DNS SEC uses Symmetrical Key Encryption [with Description]
Multiple Encryption Protocols Supported
Example: named.conf.local
We saw configuration examples and the operation of DNS SEC.
We discussed if there was 'man-in-the-middle' attacks.
It was deduced that DNS SEC was not MITM vulnerable.
The TSig function was discussed.
Peter's Purpose in Using DNS SEC:
Provide name service for internal workstations and preventing
access by users who don't have an authorized SaMBa password.
Security is an essential consideration for one of the networks
that he administers. He has successfully accomplished this.
Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but the
network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple of
hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also
the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing list,
both presenting and solving some of the most challenging
networking and configuration problems. Adam is the KLUG
Program Director and has been responsible for booking the
many outstanding presentations that KLUG offers to the Open
Source GNU Linux community. Adam is a wizard with LDAP and
is known internationally for his support of this project.
Peter Buxton has been messing with computers since middle school but
has stubbornly refused to learn programming until recently. He
learned to manually configure sendmail.cf and ppp comand lines while
he used, as few others did, OS/2 on his desktop. This personal quirk
proved a valuable asset when he switched to Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 in
1999, as linux.net.support is a vital resource (especially for Debian).
Peter is a network administrator for a large international corporation
with facilities located in Kalamazoo. Happy to be a father soon!!!

===============================================================
Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!
Todd Pillars is the Chairperson of KLUG! His first PC
was a 1981 TRS-80 Model 3 2.03Mhz, 16K ram, 5 1/4 floppy
running TRS-DOS and QBASIC. In 1997 he started running
a web development company that hosted web sites with Red
Hat 5.2. He was named the Executive Director of Southwest
Michigan Information Technology Institute in 2003. SMITI
provides education and alternatives to proprietary OS's and
software. They supply technology to small startup companies.
He has memberships in KLUG, Chamber of Commerce, and GLIMA.
Admittedly a HUGE Detroit Red Wings fan who loves NASCAR too.

RED HAT ENTERPRISE 3 BETA REVIEWED
"eWEEK has got a review of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 Beta, code
named Taroon. It now has the new Red Hat Bluecurve interface. New
important stuff includes: logical volume management and access
control lists in the file system. The access control list feature
is something that has been in Windows and Solaris for some time.
If you're interested, you can download it here."

LINUX GURU ALAN COX TAKES A YEAR OFF
"Linux guru Alan Cox is taking a year off from RedHat and kernel
development to get his MBA. For years, Alan Cox has maintained the
extremely stable 2.2 Linux kernel, and more or less been Linux
creator Linus Torvalds' right hand man. Now it sounds like the
2.2 kernel is up for grabs to someone who is 'good at refusing
patches and being ignored'..."

GNUMERIC NOW SUPPORTS ALL EXCEL WORKSHEET FUNCTIONS
"The latest beta release of Gnumeric has been released. According
the the developers, it is now ready and stable enough for general
use and deployment, and the final 1.2.0 release will be made on
September 8th. This release also marks the realization of a major
milestone -- all of the worksheet functions in the U.S. version of
MS Excel are now supported. I have been using 1.1.19 for quite
some time now, and it is incredibly fast, and hugely improved
compared to Gnumeric 1.0."

SPAM FILTERS [BY SEPT 2004 SPAM WILL DOMINATE E-MAIL - WIRED 9/03]
Spam is a growing problem for email users, and many solutions have
been proposed, from a postage fee for email to Turing tests to
simply not accepting email from people you don't know. Spam
filtering is one way to reduce the impact of the problem on the
individual user (though it does nothing to reduce the effect of
the network traffic generated by spam). In its simplest form, a
spam filter is a mechanism for classifying a message as either
spam or not spam.

EMBARRASSING DISPATCHES FROM THE SCO FRONT
"Dennis Ritchie has acknowledged he with Ken Thompson wrote the
code cited as 'proof' by SCO. This seems to fit perfectly with
Bruce Perens' Analysis of SCO's Las Vegas Slide Show, and undermine
Blake Stowell's claim 'At this point it's going to be his word
against ours." Andreas Spengler writes "In the ongoing battle
between SCO and the Linux community, German publisher Heise has
shown that not only was the Linux implementation of the Berkeley
Packet filter written outside of Caldera (now SCO), but that it
was common practice there and at other companies to remove the
BSD copyright notices from the internally used source code. In
effect, SCO has proven publicly that they violated the BSD
license." (Warning, article is in German.) Finally, a
semi-anonymous reader writes "Learn all about how IBM's stomach
will be roasted on a pyre of CDs at...
http://www.welovethescoinformationminister.org/ ."

KLUG MEMBER HOISTS HILARIOUS ANTI-MCBRIDE [SCO] PARODY WEB SITE
http://www.welovethescoinformationminister.org/ <=== ENJOY THIS!
KLUG member Ian S. decided that Darl McBride was apparently just
too insane to be ignored and decided to have some fun with it.
Drawing a parallel between McBride and Baghdad's only slightly less
whacky Iraqi Minister of Information, Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf! Darl
has simply become a pathetic joke and the target of disgust from the
entire Open Source Linux and Unix community. SCO IS THE COMPANY
THAT REALLY SUCKS! Is McBride guilty of stock market price
manipulation? Now he has tipped over his own teacups by displaying
a serious case of paranoid delusion that IBM is attacking him from
on high through their allied Linux forces. Give him way stronger
medication!!! It is with pride and admiration that KLUG can boast
that one of our legion of Linux extremists was the originator of
this widely enjoyed parody web site. It has been widely publicized
across the internet by Linux loving web news purveyors! GREAT WORK
IAN... His server having been /.'d, the site is being moved to a
more industrial strength location. Hope he makes some money off a
banner ad or two to cover his expenses in entertaining us.

SCO SAYS IBM IS BEATING UP ON THEM
SCO's McBride claims that IBM is stage-managing all the attacks and
bad press, which would probably explain why I cleared this article
with IBM World Headquarters before running it (not!). The publisher
of Linux Journal invites SCO to sue. One of SCO's lawyers has this
barely coherent interview where he spouts legal rubbish for a
gullible reporter. There's an interview in German (machine
translation) with SCO's execs. And finally, SCO is still hoping
for a settlement with IBM.

SCO: CODE PROOF ANALYZED, LINUS INTERVIEWED
SCO Reveals Its 'Secrets' - Linux and Unix Communities Laugh
"Bruce Perens has now obtained a copy of the entire slide show from
which the recently scrutinized SCO-related Linux code excerpts came,
and has analyzed the remainder of the 'evidence' they presented there.
Their other code exhibit turns out to have been the venerable
Berkeley Packet Filter(!), and their revised line-counts are
consistent with simply adding together all the lines of code that
have been contributed by Unix licensees." Also, Iphtashu Fitz writes
"A new interview with Linus Torvalds has been posted on eWeek.com.
In it he slams SCO over the recently leaked source code. Among other
things, he points out in the interview that some of the code in
question has been removed from the 2.6 kernel ['because developers
complained about how "ugly" it was'] before SCO even started
complaining."
*** Torvalds: "They are smoking crack. Their slides said there are
[more than] 800,000 lines of SMP code that are "infringing," and
they are just off their rocker. The SMP code was written by a
number of Linux people I know well (I did a lot of the SMP IRQ
scalability myself, personally), so their claims are just ludicrous.
And they claim they own JFS [journaled file system technology] too.
Whee. They're not shy about claiming ownership of other people's
code—while at the same time beating their breasts about how they
have been wronged. So the SCO people seem to have a few problems
keeping the truth straight, but if there is something they know
all about, it's hypocrisy."

SAMBA TEAM POINTS OUT SCO'S HYPOCRISY
"An article talking about the Samba Team's Statement to SCO. While
Darl McBride blasts the GPL, his company simultaneously announces
the use of Samba 3 in their OpenServer product. I'm not sure if it
breaks my heart or boils my blood to read this stuff. Probably a
little of both."

LINUX COMMUNITY POURS SCORN ON SCO [OH HOW SCO SUCKS!!!]
Unilever, a major Linux user, declared that it still has no intention
of buying a license, even though SCO has appointed Gregory Blepp as
head of licensing in Europe, with a remit to push UnixWare licenses
to Linux users. Martin Armitage, senior vice president at Unilever's
global information organization, suggested that SCO is focused more
on the court case than on developing its software.

WHAT IS SUSE WAITING FOR? CHRISTMAS OR WHAT???
Since everyone has a theory on why SCO is doing what they are doing,
I will instead talk about something else that has been weighing on
my mind for the past few weeks. SuSE, of late, is constantly
pigeon-holed as an "also-ran" in the media. It is, and has been for
quite sometime, perceived as the "number two" Linux or "the other"
Linux--second to Red Hat in many ways. Even though it it clearly the
dominant leader in Europe and the undisputed king in its home nation
of Germany, SuSE's weaker showing in the North American market has
relegated perceptions of the company to "second best."

In short order, lobbyists from Microsoft-funded trade groups were
pushing officials at the State Department and the U.S. Patent and

with the Business Software Alliance, said his group objected to the
suggestion in the proposal that overly broad or restrictive
intellectual-property rights might in some cases stunt technological
innovation and economic growth.

OPENOFFICE.ORG FOR MAC DELAYED TWO YEARS
"According to their Mac porting page, OpenOffice.org will not release

IBM DISMISSES OPENOFFICE.ORG AS CHILD'S PLAY [UK'S REGISTER]
"IBM claims to have put more than $1 billion behind open source
software, but the company is failing to pay even a modest amount of
lip service to one of free software's most needed products. "Karen
Smith, vice president of Linux strategy and market development at IBM,
has been telling a number of publications that no open source
equivalent of Microsoft Office exists. Lest you think Smith has been
living in a cave, rest easy. She does appear to be acquainted with
OpenOffice and its StarOffice incarnation from Sun Microsystems. These
suites, however, are not good enough for IBM. "'What we haven't seen
become available is a full replacement for Microsoft Office,' Smith
told ComputerWire..." A follow-up article, this time with

site is more optimistic, saying they may still be able to connect,
