PHP can do this, and pretty easily, at that. If you build apache with PHP, 
or if you install the DSO php module, you can use PHP for this.  Something 
like $HTTP_SERVER_VARS['CLIENT_ADDRESS'] I think.  

It's 'heavier' than SSI, but you can do a lot of other fun things with it 
too.
