Oh believe me, I'm not suggesting we actually do it!  :-)

It's not really practical for KLUG to maintain, develop, or distribute
the software any longer, since we no longer have a running installation.

Not really.  The software is actually distributed as source.  Someone
else packages it for a limited number of distributions.  Since I had
planned on installing this on a new/dedicated machine, I picked a
distribution that had binary packages made for it.  That way I can get
it up and running the fastest and easiest way possible to evaluate it.  

It's also nice in this [evaluation] case to use a distro that is known
to run the software without problems.

If I decide to stick with this package, I may switch distros later,
taking the longer/harder route of compiling from source.  Or not. :-)
