Yep.  Hopin'-and-a-prayin' that someday a Linux distribution will take
this similair "radical" step.  At least turn them into XML so things
like yast or gnome-setup tools have some schema-aware backend so nifty
gui configuration tools can wholesale trash the configuration of a
service.

Try writing a script to automatically edit something like smb.conf? 
Just WAY to hard.  If smb.conf was an LDAP object (or ou more likely) or
at least an XML file this would be trivial to add/remove shares, etc...
from a running server automatically.

Not holding my breath - still to many TEXT FILES RULEZ!! people in the
Linux camp.
