NFS is pretty easy to set up if you use a shareware (nagware) tool
that does all the nasty configuration stuff for you.

And since you only have to use it once, its nagging is less than

I haven't tried automounting SMB shares, but NFS Manager creates the
link for you in /Network/Servers.  The OS X system automagically
mounts such links whenever you access them.
