Found a reference to this one on Slashdot, at

The article at http://www.research.att.com/~smb/papers/fnat.pdf
apparently describes how to remotely count the number of machines hiding
behind a NAT box, and also how NAT software might be changed to defeat
the scheme. I've not had a chance to read the PDF yet, but thought some
of you guys might be interested (if you haven't seen it already).
