THE STANDARD KLUG BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION - LINUX BOOT CAMP!!!
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/beginner01.html
===============================================================

BEGINNER'S NIGHT PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
*****************************************
Andrew Thompson, KLUG's Install Master, was again helping to
coordinate the installation of too many Linux boxes at once.
He was helping with 3 laptop and two desktop installs. Outside
the weather was cold but the demand for Linux was hot inside
the KLUG meeting room at the Chamber! He helped Mike to install
BSWare v8.0 on his IBM ThinkPad 600e, Steve to install BSWare
v8.0 on his HP Pavilion laptop with 512Mb RAM (dual boot with
M$ XP), Alan with a switch from Suse to BSWare v8.0 (problems
with getting his wireless nic to work in Suse) on his Gateway
Solo laptop, Jerry and Ben with their BearOPS install on a hot
rod desktop (ooops they blew away Windows-tee hee), and Ralph
with a kernel recompile to solve a modem driver and sound card
problem with his BSWare v8.0 desktop install. Many KLUG members
helped in this process - Todd, Bruce, Stu, Peter, and Bob were
experiencing peak demand tonight. Dirk was tweaking away at
the KLUG LTSP server and could be heard preaching the gospel of
Torvalds/Stallman and KLUG to many of the info hungry potential
new Linux users and visitors. Many others were jumping in with
additional scripture readings and frequent Amen's were rejoined
by the happy and yammering audience! Linux is getting red hot!!!

At least 5 laptops, previously intalled portable Linux systems,
were jacked into the 2.3 Mbs DSL line accessed through the KLUG
network hub or WAP. The action was furious and festive. Andrew
has an SSH connection to his home server many miles away and was
projecting that X desktop display onto his laptop while at the
Chamber. Not super speedy but extremely useful in the install
process for reference. Andrew Thompson did a great job of
multi-tasking again tonight. A big tip of the Red Hat to him for
his fine service to KLUG!!!

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Todd Pillars is the Chairperson of KLUG! His first PC
was a 1981 TRS-80 Model 3 2.03Mhz, 16K ram, 5 1/4 floppy
running TRS-DOS and QBASIC. In 1997 he started running
a web development company that hosted web sites with Red
Hat 5.2. He was named the Executive Director of Southwest
Michigan Information Technology Institute in 2003. SMITI
provides education and alternatives to proprietary OS's and
software. They supply technology to small startup companies.
He has memberships in KLUG, Chamber of Commerce, and GLIMA.
Admittedly a HUGE Detroit Redwings fan who loves NASCAR too.
We look forward to another progressive year of growth for
KLUG under Todd's leadership.

KLUG Program Director gets 'props' from another elite in the
Open Source GNU Linux community. "BTW, I have read Adam's
LDAPv3 presentation, and from that I know he must have an
excellent technical background. I think it must be one of the
