I. PRESENTATION RECAP
THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (22 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
Package Management (RPM's)
by Bruce Smith

Tonight we heard Bruce's "Package Management" presentation,
new and updated! He focused mainly on RPM from the command
line, with a lot of new features and tricks, some of which
he didn't even know about back when he first did his previous
presentation. He will cover installing, updating, removing,
verifying, querying, and many other features of the "rpm"
command. Complete with a live demonstration! Bruce also gave
us an overview of "tar", and how to build and install packages
from source code.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
***********************
Bruce used a laptop running Red Hat v8.0 with the KLUG SVGA
projector to take us through the details of Linux package
management. He used the terminal window to display a summary
of the command line examples and functions performed by TAR &
RPM. In addition to seeing the examples he demonstrated those
functions from a "live" command line. There were lots of good
questions and remarks of satisfaction as he showed us RPM his
examples. We saw how to get lots of information from RPM. He
talked about building RPM's and updating existing packages.
This presentation was a repeat of a previously presented that
was updated with additional usage options and new features.
Bruce's frequent KLUG presentations are extremely informative
and professional. He prepared this presentation with little
lead time and made it very interesting material for KLUGites!
His content was prepared in text with the vi editor in an easy
to follow outline format.

Bruce's original presentation was done in October of 2000!

#MEETING126

Bruce Smith is a Systems Administrator and Software Developer
for Armstrong International Inc. where he is responsible for
an HP-UX network of Servers, Workstations, printers and
X-Terminals spanning five buildings in Three Rivers. Bruce
has a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Central
Michigan University. (go Chips! :) Bruce runs Linux, almost
exclusively, on all his PC's at work and home, and runs a lot
of Armstrong's networking services on Linux!

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 02/18/2003

Practical SSH
by Dirk Bartley

Tonight Dirk will discuss the secure shell and the Open SSH
Project. The following questions will hopefully be answered:
What ssh is, what ssh is not, why ssh is an important package
to understand, how to use ssh to obtain a remote secure login,
how to use ssh to use ssh to transfer files, how to use private
key technology to get a remote login without a password, and
how to forward tcp ports remotely. Dirk will also attempt to
explain a little bit of how ssh works.

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems administrator
for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division of Schupan and Sons.
His passion for free software comes second to spending time
with his wife Dawn, an Upper Peninsula native, and taking
Shelly, their sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk.
These interests are only followed by his love of playing ice
hockey. Dirk was the chairperson of KLUG in 2001 & 2002.
He is working on the KLUG LTSP server and client furiously!!!

KLUG SCRIBE GETS HELP FROM ASSISTANT MEETING NOTES EDITOR
I only know that his first name is Bruce and that I often
got him confused with the OTHER Bruce when I replied to him.
He helps me with KLUG FLASHES URL's and content editing.
This is the behavior that makes Open Source a community!!!

companies and vendor-neutral open source concerns recently
banded together to form the Desktop Linux Consortium, or DLC.

CodeWeavers, Debian.org, DesktopLinux.com, KDE, Linux
Professional Institute (LPI), Lycoris, The Linux Terminal Server
Project (LTSP), MandrakeSoft, NeTraverse, OpenOffice.org,

DOES LINUX HAVE A NEW WORST ENEMY???
A few weeks ago, SCO, the company formerly known as Caldera
International -- and as Caldera Systems before that -- announced
it was "researching" use of its intellectual property. This
admission came after a story by Maureen O'Gara, which speculated
that SCO was going after patent fees, was posted to Slashdot and
other web sites. http://www.osopinion.com/perl/story/20717.html

MOZILLA STILL CHAMP WHEN IT COMES TO STOPPING POPUPS
The long and legendary project to build an open-source web
browser that would (a.) be a credible alternative to Microsoft
Internet Explorer, (b.) support every Web standard ever devised,
even the ones that only seemed like good ideas, and vitally
(c.) be a powerful productivity app for users, not a quirky
power-utility for geeks. Done, done and done.

GATES TAKING 'PERVASIVE' LINUX SERIOUSLY
Noting that this isn't the first time (remember OS/2?) Microsoft
has had to deal with a serious threat to its business, Bill Gates
explained Tuesday why the company will survive a Linux platform
that is "out there and very pervasive."  {source: Paul VandenBosch}

RED HAT AGGRESSIVE WITH PREMIUM LINUX
Leading Linux seller Red Hat is becoming more aggressive in
pushing its premium operating system products, using support

LINUX CONVERSATIONS: CONSULTANT SURVEY
If you make any part of your living by using free and/or
open-source software, tell us what you think.
Linux has made it with the big guys. IBM, Disney, Merrill
Lynch and Hewlett-Packard (to name a few) have all jumped
on the Linux bandwagon, and a couple are busy playing the
trumpet. For these large companies, the cost savings of
using Lintel instead of UNIX or Solaris are compelling.
