As in a Qmail style Maildir:

~/Maildir/klug/new/
~/Maildir/klug/cur/
~/Maildir/klug/tmp/

$ls ~/Maildir/klug/new/

1046411914.21814_1.puff.int.zoner.org
1046412501.22055_2.puff.int.zoner.org

Each email is stored in a distinct file.

I will have a look at ipop3.
