OpenOffice can connect to Postgresql or MySQL as a data source.
(just press F4 in OO - after it's setup) Even a nice GUI! :-)
I've done it using Postgresql and the UnixODBC drivers on Linux.
Check out Adam's database presentation on the KLUG ftp server
as a good place to start.
