Once DSP baed modems hit the market I'd never ever consider anything but an
external one now. You're guaranteeed to have a real hardware modem, one that will work across all OSes. I know they're a tad more expensive, but if you find the cheapest external one you can get your hands on you'll probably be happier with that than a similarly priced internalone.
