If this is an older machine (limited hard disk space and memory) perhaps one
of the bootable CD/Floppy distros would be a more secure alternative than an
old distribution. This could be setup to boot Linux then mount the hard disk
to be able to write to.

I leave it to the experts to enumerate the best alternatives to accomplish
this.
