I have the Prof's notes but I cannot give them to you as they are not 
public domain.  Besides, I apparently have only hardcopy.

I can tell you to try http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ and I can tell 
you that we did it with BusyBox, TinyLogin and of course a custom built 
kernel.

Tell you what I would love and that is a primer on techniques used to 
find out what exactly what kernel modules one's system is using and/or 
needs so the rest can be stripped out for efficiency, or so that if 
something is missing, it can be fixed.
