Okay, with that previous thread now on Advo, let's concentrate on what
_is_ available for users. Specifically, where is Sun taking the LGPL
OpenOffice base.

1. OASIS is formalizing OpenOffice 1.0 XML formats as the "office" XML
standard

Sun has not only gotten Corel involved (as well as lesser known
Arbortext), but end-user, documentation-standards setting Boeing. This
is a massive boost for OpenOffice/StarOffice for enterprise firms that
have massive documentation projects. And these guys usually set the
standards.

2. Sun has released Javascript for OpenOffice, VB conversion project

Sun has just released an OpenOffice-focused, "sandboxed" Javascript, and
is pouring huge, direct support into supporting common VBScript in
common MS Office documents "as-is." This is a major move to get both
the "nay-sayers" as well as the more important "we have tens of
thousands of man hours in scripts" over. 60% of companies aren't
staying with Office 97 just because they don't want to pay for the
product, but they don't want to pay for the manhours lost in recoding
some of their VB to work with Office XP.

3. Sun continues to fund 50% of OpenOffice developers, full-time

Like AOL and Mozilla, Sun continue to directly fund half of OpenOffice's
paid development. Why? Because their products directly benefit, as
well as putting a "dent" in their [same] competitor's ability to
leverage their OS dominance into the client application. While the sale
of StarOffice probably does not offset all the costs of these
developers, it does help ease some enterprises' concerns over "if it's
free, it won't last."
