Word, Excel... doesn't really matter to me, as we were having a discussion
about the larger picture. Pick any proprietary file format, and you can
build a case study of how it effects (distorts?) the market.

The point at which the discussion rightly forks is right there... we've seen a 
technical thread go on about the details of spreadsheets and so forth, and 
there's another thread that evoles on the general nature of proprietary vs. 
"open" file formats for these purposes, in general. Personally, I don't care
much for the first thread (since I'm not a heavy user of spreadsheets), and
cases made in the second thread can be based on many formats and their 
associated packages or package families.
