Well, I've played just enough with WINE to get a feel for how well it
works, and at least with my installation, the answer is: not very. MS
Office applications WILL start up and run, but seem a bit testy. Of
course, I haven't really TRIED to be productive with them, BUT:

Just for a quick test, I started up MS Access and tried to first open a
database on the Windows drive, then create one in my home directory. The
first test worked, but I couldn't see any of the database objects, and
the tabs that are supposed to make it easy to switch from one set of
objects (like tables) to another (like queries) didn't work. Trying to
create a new database killed the app completely.

SO, from my admittedly meager experience, I would have to say, yes, you
CAN get MS-based applications to run, but it won't be easy. Of course, I
haven't bothered to upgrade Wine since I installed anything on this
machine, so your mileage WILL vary.
